Leadership Spotlight: Shawn Vento

Shawn holds a Bachelors Degree in Physical and Health Education from the University of Toronto, a Masters of Science in Multidisciplinary Studies from Buffalo State, a Certificate of Qualification from Ontario College of Teachers and a Certificate for the Principal’s Qualification Program from Ontario College of Teachers.
He has worked across Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Curacao, and Ontario including positions as the Head of Boarding at KISJ and Associate Principal at Dhahran Elementary Middle School (ISG).
I’ve always known I wanted to be a teacher. Working with young people has always brought me energy and purpose, and I’ve long been driven by a love of adventure, curiosity, and a desire to experience new cultures. International education allowed me to bring all of that together, supporting students while learning from and living in diverse communities around the world.
There’s a unique joy and sense of accomplishment in helping a student grasp a new concept, develop a skill, or see the world from a different perspective. Moments like these are powerful reminders of why this work matters. I also deeply value the opportunity to work alongside passionate, like-minded educators who share a commitment to putting students first. Being part of a team that collaborates, learns, and grows together in service of students is what continues to inspire me every day.

My educational philosophy centers on putting students first in all areas of their development: academic, social, and emotional. Every student has unique potential, and it is our responsibility as educators to create the conditions for them to thrive. This includes fostering strong relationships, ensuring high-quality instruction, and building a culture where curiosity, creativity, and well-being are valued.
As a leader, I am collaborative, transparent, and student-centered. I believe in shared leadership and in empowering teams to take ownership of their work. I value open communication, data-informed decision-making, and continuous reflection and improvement.
The DAS community can expect a Head of School who listens, supports, and leads with purpose and positivity. I am committed to building strong partnerships with students, staff, and families as we grow together into a school known for excellence, inclusivity, and care.
I am excited to join Dar Essalam American School at such a pivotal moment in its journey. As a young school with a clear vision and strong foundation, DAS is uniquely positioned to become a regional leader in education. The opportunity to help shape that growth is incredibly inspiring. I’m particularly drawn to the school’s innovative blend of American curriculum and Finnish pedagogical practices, all rooted in Moroccan culture and values.
I look forward to working closely with students, staff, and families to build a student-centered, inclusive, and collaborative learning environment that fosters academic excellence, creativity, cultural awareness, and social responsibility. My hope is to embed myself fully into the DAS community and engage in a thoughtful, strategic process that strengthens enrollment, deepens alignment in curriculum and instruction, and supports continued growth.
I am also eager to explore the beauty of Morocco and the surrounding region with my family.

Made me feel at ease throughout the process which allowed my true self to shine through. Explained every detail of the process.
An interesting fact about me is that I was the captain of the 1992 University of Toronto Men’s Swimming Team, which won the Canadian national championship that year. Swimming has always been a big part of my life, and I still swim regularly, both in the pool and in the ocean, even during the winter months. I stay active as a coach, working with elementary, middle, and high school students.
One of the things I enjoy most is jumping into workouts with the team. Our student-athletes are often surprised (and maybe a little impressed) that I can still hold my own against the top varsity swimmers. For me, it is a great way to stay connected to student life, model well-being and perseverance, and build strong relationships outside the classroom.
Many thanks to Shawn Vento for sharing his insights, experiences, and vision for education. We wish him and the vibrant community at the Dar Essalam American School the best in this new chapter ahead!
