Congratulations to Dr. Hafida Becker for accepting the position, beginning August 2026! Dr. Becker currently serves as the Principal (Director of Instruction) at the QSI International School of Shenzhen.

She has been an international educator for over 25 years, serving students, teachers, and families in China, the United States, and Europe.

In this feature, read about Dr. Becker’s passion for education, commitment to fostering global citizenship, and how her diverse experiences — both personal and professional — shape her approach to education and leadership.

What drew you to pursue the world of education? And what drew you into international education specifically?

I was drawn to education because of the teachers who shaped my own life. They created spaces where I felt supported, curious, and challenged, and those experiences stayed with me and I really wanted to pay it forward. Over time, I realized that I wanted to offer that same sense of belonging and possibility to young people. Being in schools has always felt meaningful to me, there’s an energy, a sense of growth and connection, that I haven’t found anywhere else.

My interest in international education grew out of a genuine appreciation for different cultures and the richness that diverse communities bring to learning. As a child, I moved to a new country every two to three years, so being surrounded by different languages, traditions, and perspectives became a natural part of my life. Working in international schools has only deepened that appreciation. I’ve seen firsthand how much we can learn from one another when we listen, share, and collaborate. I truly love the blend of cultures that students and families bring to a school community. It keeps me growing as an educator and as a person, and it motivates me to help create environments where everyone feels valued, supported, and at home, no matter where in the world they come from.

Please tell us about your education philosophy and your leadership style. What can the Hokkaido International School community expect?

My education philosophy is grounded in the belief that every child deserves to feel seen and supported, and that all children can learn—maybe not on the same day or in the same way, but each can experience success. I aim to create learning environments where students feel confident to explore their interests, take risks, and grow academically, socially, and emotionally. I believe strongly in collaboration, open communication, and using reflection and data to continually improve teaching and learning.

My leadership style is relational, and service-oriented. I listen carefully, seek input, and build trust through empathy, consistency, and clear expectations. I also value joy, celebration, and the traditions that give a school its heartbeat. The community can expect a leader who is present, visible, approachable, and committed to student success and staff wellbeing, working alongside all stakeholders to keep our school welcoming, innovative, and globally minded.

Congratulations on your upcoming role at Hokkaido International School! What are you excited about in this new role?

I’m excited about this new role because it offers the chance to work in a new country with new opportunities. Leading a school is about more than managing. It is about inspiring students, supporting teachers, and partnering with families to create a place where everyone feels valued and motivated to grow. My hope is to build on the school’s strengths and traditions while encouraging innovation and inclusivity, ensuring every student can discover their passions and reach their potential.

I want to foster a culture where curiosity, kindness, and respect are at the core, and where traditions and new ideas come together in meaningful ways. Ultimately, I look forward to collaborating with the entire community to create an environment where students not only succeed academically but also develop into compassionate, confident global citizens ready to make a positive difference in the world.

What is an interesting fact or story about you that you would like to share?

I’m the youngest of nine siblings, growing up in a large family, and at age 13, I was adopted for new opportunities, an experience that shaped my resilience and openness to change. Having moved between countries every two to three years, I learned early how to adapt, connect, and appreciate different cultures. I speak French, Algerian Arabic, English, basic Spanish, and survival Mandarin, which helps me relate to diverse communities.

One story I often share is about navigating new schools, languages, and friendships while carrying a piece of each place with me. These experiences inspire my passion for creating welcoming, inclusive school environments where every student feels at home and valued. Growing up in a big family and living across cultures motivates me to foster global-mindedness and empathy in all I do as an educator and leader.

Many thanks to Dr. Hafida Becker for sharing her insights, experiences, and vision for education. We wish her and the vibrant community at the Hokkaido International School the best in this new chapter ahead!
