Redd, Jr. for accepting the position, beginning August 2026! Gerald currently serves as the Head of School at the American International School in Egypt.

Gerald holds a Bachelors Degree in Education from Arkansas Tech University and a Masters of Educational Leadership and Policy Study from The University of Texas at Arlington.

He has been a Head of School at The American International School in Egypt and Head of School at The Universal College in Aley, Lebanon.

In this feature, read about Gerald’s passion for education, commitment to fostering global citizenship, and how his diverse experiences — both personal and professional — shape his approach to education and leadership.

What drew you to pursue the world of education? And what drew you into international education specifically?

My inspiration to become an educator began with my mother, a retired special education teacher, whose devotion showed me how deeply an educator can impact every learner. Throughout my own journey, caring teachers and mentors further sparked my passion for student-centered, inclusive learning and the fulfillment that comes from helping students grow and connect.

I was drawn to international education by the opportunity to serve diverse communities and nurture global perspectives. Working with students from varied backgrounds, fostering intercultural understanding, and helping young people develop as compassionate global citizens aligns perfectly with my values of holistic growth and lifelong learning.

Please tell us about your education philosophy and your leadership style. What can the George Washington Academy community expect?

My educational philosophy is shaped by educators who modeled an unwavering belief in every learner’s potential and a shared responsibility to help each child discover their strengths. I lead with compassion, high expectations, and a commitment to creating environments where students feel safe, challenged, and seen.

As a leader, I empower teachers and intentionally design systems grounded in collaboration, equity, and strong partnerships with parents. The George Washington Academy community can expect a school where every student, family, and educator is known, valued, and supported—and where a cohesive, caring culture enables all to thrive together.

Congratulations on your upcoming role at the George Washington Academy! What are you excited about in this new role?

GWA is a school defined by its strong sense of community and belonging. From the moment you arrive on campus, you can feel the pride and ownership the community holds for what GWA represents. I am genuinely excited for my family and me to become part of this vibrant environment—to learn from, contribute to, and grow alongside the relationships that make the school so exceptional.

My hope is to invest deeply in GWA’s ongoing success by partnering closely with students, staff, and families to build upon the school’s tradition of excellence and connection. Together, I believe we can continue writing an exciting new chapter—one in which every member of the community feels supported, valued, and inspired.

What is an interesting fact or story about you that you would like to share?

An interesting fact about me is that I became a father at 40—an experience that has deeply shaped my leadership. Parenting has given me greater empathy and a clearer understanding of the hopes and concerns families carry. My children are third-culture kids, and together we have lived and traveled in different parts of the world, embracing new cultures and perspectives.

These experiences have broadened my worldview and reinforced the importance of inclusion, belonging, and global mindedness in schools. They continually remind me that every student arrives with a unique story, and that strong relationships—built on trust, respect, and cultural awareness—are essential to helping them thrive.

Many thanks to Gerald W. Redd, Jr. for sharing his insights, experiences, and vision for education. We wish him and the vibrant community at the George Washington Academy the best in this new chapter ahead!
