Leadership Spotlight: Sandra Lopez

What drew you to pursue the world of education? And what drew you into international education specifically?

My path into education began while working with children with special needs through United Cerebral Palsy. Supporting children and families during some of their most challenging moments taught me the importance of patience, resilience, and the profound impact educators can have on a child’s life. Those early experiences inspired me to dedicate my career to helping young people reach their potential.

Over the past twenty-six years, I have had the privilege of serving in a variety of roles, including teacher, coordinator, curriculum leader, special needs specialist, and principal. Each experience has deepened my understanding of teaching, learning, and school leadership.

International education appealed to me because of its commitment to global perspectives, cultural understanding, and preparing students to thrive in an interconnected world. I am energized by the opportunity to learn from diverse communities while helping students become thoughtful, compassionate, and internationally minded individuals.

Please tell us about your education philosophy and your leadership style. What can the KAS community expect?

My educational philosophy is grounded in the belief that learning is most powerful when students actively construct meaning, make connections across disciplines, and apply their understanding in authentic contexts. While academic excellence is essential, I believe education must also nurture the whole child by developing critical thinking, agency, resilience, empathy, and the confidence to navigate an increasingly complex world. I believe effective schools create learning environments that provide multiple pathways for students to access, engage with, and demonstrate their learning, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed.

As a leader, I believe sustainable school improvement is built through strong relationships, a shared vision, high expectations, and a culture of continuous learning. Drawing upon over twenty-six years in education, a background in psychology, and a Postgraduate Specialization in Child and Adolescent Mental Health, I strive to balance academic rigor with a deep commitment to student well-being.

The community can expect a visible, collaborative, and pedagogically focused instructional leader who values inquiry, innovation, evidence-informed practice, and meaningful partnerships. I believe the strongest schools are learning communities where every individual feels valued, empowered, and inspired to achieve their fullest potential.

Congratulations on your upcoming role at the KAS! What are you excited about in this new role?

I am excited about this opportunity because it allows me to join a community that already has strong foundations, dedicated educators, and a shared commitment to student learning and well-being. Throughout my career, I have found the greatest fulfillment in working alongside students, teachers, and families to build upon existing strengths while continuing to grow and innovate together.

My hope is to develop meaningful relationships across the KAS community, learn from the traditions, experiences, perspectives, and strengths that make the school unique, and contribute to the continued success of the Elementary School. I look forward to partnering with faculty and families to support high-quality learning experiences and ensure that every student feels challenged, supported, and valued.

Most importantly, I hope to become a proud member of the KAS family and work alongside our students, staff, and families to help every Dragon thrive, grow, and reach their fullest potential.

What is an interesting fact or story about you that you would like to share?

One aspect of my background that has profoundly shaped both my professional and personal life is my early work with children with special needs and their families as a developmental specialist and case manager. I had the privilege of supporting children with a wide range of developmental, learning, behavioral, and emotional needs, and those experiences transformed my understanding of how children learn, grow, and thrive.

It was during those years that I discovered a deep passion for helping children who may struggle, who may be underestimated, or who simply need someone to recognize their strengths and potential. I learned that growth looks different for every child and that some of the most meaningful successes are not measured by grades, but by the development of confidence, resilience, self-belief, and a sense of possibility.

While my studies in psychology and my Postgraduate Specialization in Child and Adolescent Mental Health have influenced my work, it is the relationships I have built with students, families, and educators over more than twenty-six years that have taught me the most. Those experiences have reinforced my belief that meaningful relationships are at the heart of learning and that every child deserves to be seen, valued, challenged, and supported. Helping young people discover their strengths, develop confidence in themselves, and realize what they are capable of achieving remains one of the greatest privileges of my work in education.
