What drew you to pursue the world of education? And what drew you into international education specifically?
I loved being a primary teacher, being able to spend my energy and focus on how to create inspiring learning experiences for children in so many different disciplines. As I developed more into administration I found joy in enabling fellow educators as well as young people in exploring their potential and fulfilling their goals. I have almost always lived outside of my home country and have benefitted from the life-expanding experience of engaging with new cultures and places – international schools therefore are a no-brainer as an amazing workplace for educators.
Please tell us about your education philosophy and your leadership style. What can the Berlin International School community expect?
My philosophy of education centres around two powerful constructs – agency and community. I believe the work of educators is about enabling, inspiring and creating conditions for success. Children and adults thrive best when they feel in control of their lives, leading their learning and embedded in an affirming community. Learning for most is a very social process and I hope to help create powerful communities where every member feels that they belong and believes they can be successful, where learning is a challenging and joyful process for everyone involved.
Congratulations on your upcoming role at the Berlin International School! What are you excited about in this new role?
Having had the pleasure of a sabbatical I am even more aware of what a privilege it is to work within a community of passionate creative people focussed on the learning and well-being of children and young people from around the world. I am excited to get to know the community of B.I.S and hope they will feel they hired the right person!
What is an interesting fact or story about you that you would like to share?
I actually started school in Berlin as my parents lived there until I was six years old. I have some very fond childhood memories and look forward to reconnecting with such a wonderful city
