Support the Second Annual #MyFreedomDay

Mike McCarthy, Senior Vice President and General Manager, CNN International & Kevin J. Glass, Headmaster, Atlanta International School

Last year students in local, public, private and international schools all over the world, took part in a global day of action to help end modern-day slavery. #MyFreedomDay was an incredible success! Students from more than 100 countries participated, reaching more than 160 million Facebook timelines. In addition, there were more than 33,000 tweets and 400,000 Snapchat stories. We were trending on Twitter in several countries.

What was most impressive was the energy and optimism that went into these student-led events. Our young people and our schools around the world really can make a difference in people's lives and in human society. If we stand up to do so.

Here is a snapshot of last year’s #myfreedomday, courtesy of our friends at CNN.

On March 14, 2018, CNN will be asking individuals, projects, schools, cities and countries to participate in a day of action to prevent this 21st century human-rights tragedy.

Our many thousands of schools in the US and around the world can help make this a Global Movement and a Global Day of Action. And just like last year, they will need the help of our public, independent and international schools, students and communities, to pull this off!

This is a chance for our local, national and international schools and organizations to put into action the our various missions, visions, core values, strategic plans we all collectively speak to and believe in.

If you’re interested in engaging, we’ve set up a GoogleDoc form that we would love the students and/or teacher supervisors to fill out. It should take less than a minute to complete.

We will be following up with more information in the coming weeks, including a list of suggestions and ideas that came from the schools last year. But remember, these are just suggestions. The sky’s the limit here when we’re talking about creative events, and we encourage all students to dream big in their planning.

In the meantime, we’d like to encourage students to use their social media platforms to help spread the word. They can do so by answering these two questions: “What does freedom mean to you?” and/or “What is something we could do to make sure everyone lives in a free world?”

Many thanks for standing up with us on this one. The time for silence and apathy around the modern scourge of slavery is over.
