Guidelines for Writing Letters of
Reference
This candidate has applied for positions in American and international elementary and secondary schools overseas. Your comments will help us evaluate the applicant's background and experience as we consider his or her application.
Please note that the online evaluation form is not the only way to submit a reference for a candidate. You may still send in a letter of reference, if you prefer; it is not necessary to submit both the online evaluation form and a letter of reference.
Copies of the letters of reference are sent to prospective employers. Therefore, the reference should be typed, preferably on school letterhead, and MUST BE SIGNED. The letter of reference should include the following information about the candidate:
Candidate's name
Current position at the school
Period covered by the letter of reference (starting and ending dates)
School(s) at which you observed the candidate's work
When writing the letter of reference, your comments about the following will be of particular help in relating the applicant to the specific needs of overseas schools:
Teaching/administrative ability
Leadership qualities
Outside interests
Adaptability to unusual and difficult situations
When signing the letter of reference, please include the following:
Your printed name
Your signature
Your email
Your business telephone
Your evening/weekend telephone
Your mailing address
An online evaluation form for Teachers/Counselors Candidates has been provided which can be accessed at <www.iss.edu/edustaff/Evaluation_Form.doc>. The form must be printed and returned to ISS as instructed below.
Letters may then be submitted via mail, fax, or email to the attention of:
